Description of module content:

This module includes reflective practice and supporting skills for positive birth. Moral and ethical issues in challenging circumstances. Autonomous midwifery supporting all births with inter-professional and inter-agency working relationships. Theories and frameworks in midwifery practice and consideration of the humanities and their relevance to midwifery practice. Professional, legal and ethical agendas for contemporary midwifery practice and public well-being.You will also consider national and international perspectives and comparisons on pregnancy and childbearing. This includes translating research evidence into practice and overcoming barriers to change in midwifery. You will explore the role of midwives working with women and birthing people, respecting client self-advocacy and agency within the health care relationship. All of which will consider perspectives of human rights in childbirth and an assets based care framework.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Evaluate the role of the midwife within multidisciplinary and multi agency settings in supporting all women, birthing people and their families to achieve choice and control during their childbirth experience.

LO2: Critically assess psychological, behavioural and cognitive factors across the life span and apply to midwifery practice within the scope of chosen project.

LO3: Critically appraise the role of the midwife in providing culturally sensitive and inclusive midwifery care.

LO4: Demonstrate the ability to evaluate sources of evidence and research methodologies using data and literature to support a reasoned argument and innovative approaches to problem solving.

LO5: Debate and critically reflect upon a range of theoretical and other perspectives which inform the art and science of midwifery practice.

Independent Learning Seminar 16 Seminars will be lecturer-facilitated and will enable you to explore and apply theory to consolidate your knowledge and understanding. The majority of the discussion will be student-led and happen within small groups of students. To get full benefit from the seminar and to support other students, you are expected to come prepared having engaged with the module material and associated essential reading.
Independent Learning Lecture 16 Lectures will be delivered synchronously. Outlines of the content will be available in advance.
Independent Learning Tutorial 16 Group tutorials will support on online self-directed work. This is intended to enable all students in the tutorial to learn from each other.

Project - Written 100 1~2~3~4~5 Exam Period , WORDS= 7 - 8000 words Your summative assessment is a dissertation project. This is an independent piece of academic work which enables you to evaluate an aspect of midwifery practice to be agreed with your supervisor. The recommended length is 7-8000 words or equivalent, including tables but excluding references, appendices and abstract. Your project can be a literature review, extended critical essay, research proposal or an alternative format agreed with the module lead.
