This module focusses on the neonate within an intensive care setting. The module aims to support you to develop your knowledge and understanding of neonates as they transition to extra uterine life, together with the needs of their families and carers. The content will provide a systems-based approach to normal physiology and pathophysiology relevant to the neonate requiring intensive care. You will critically engage with the global evidence base which guides the therapeutic options for these infants. The principles of family integrated care, the practice of neonatal neuro developmental supportive care and importance of multidisciplinary working will be integrated into the outlined management. The concepts of compassionate leadership and promoting equality, diversity and inclusion will underpin your professional development.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Integrate knowledge, critical thinking and range of clinical skills and professional behaviours required of neonatal intensive care practices

LO2: Engage with and integrate professional regulations, principles of ethical practice and legal directives within neonatal intensive care practice.

LO3: Critically appraise the global evidence base of research, national and international guidance in relation to neonatal intensive care management, treatment options and neurodevelopmental outcomes.

LO4: Explore and individualise the evidence based strategies on supporting the emotional, social and educational needs of families/carers in the neonatal setting.
