| Independent Learning | Seminar | 14 | Our scheduled online seminars are led by a lecturer and are designed to support your ongoing learning and development within the module. They will provide an opportunity to build on the content introduced in the pre-recorded lectures, helping you to further explore, apply, and consolidate your understanding of physiology, pathophysiology and key concepts in neonatal care.
A main objective of the seminars will be discussion and case-based learning, allowing you to apply theory and current evidence to practice-focused scenarios. This approach is intended to strengthen your ability to link academic knowledge with real-world situations and develop your critical thinking skills.
To make the most of these sessions, it is important that you come prepared by engaging with the supporting materials available on virtual learning environment in advance. This includes pre-recorded lectures, videos, interactive quizzes, essential reading, and any additional recommended resources. Preparation will enable you to participate actively, contribute to discussions, and gain maximum benefit from the learning experience. |
| Independent Learning | Guided independent study | 60 | Each week, essential and recommended reading materials and learning resources will be available on the VLE to support your directed study and independent learning. The essential reading is central to your understanding of the key topics and should be prioritised, as it directly supports the module learning outcomes and informs assessment preparation. The recommended reading is intended to broaden and deepen your knowledge, encouraging you to explore topics in greater detail and develop a wider perspective of the subject area. You are expected to engage with the reading each week, reflect on the content, and use this to prepare for seminar sessions as this will support the discussions and learning activities that take place during your seminar discussions. Alongside these, you will have access to a variety of learning resources such as presentations, case studies, videos, and online interactive activities. These resources are designed to support different learning styles and help you connect theory to practice. Engaging consistently with these materials will support your ongoing learning, strengthen your understanding of the module content, and help you feel well prepared for discussions, independent study, and assessment tasks. Support with academic reading, directed study, and effective note-taking is available through resources created by the University’s Academic Skills team, which can be accessed on the module VLE. |
| Independent Learning | Guided independent study | 125 | Throughout the trimester, you are encouraged to set aside regular time for independent study to support your learning and development. This is an opportunity to reflect on what you have learned during your scheduled teaching sessions and build your confidence and understanding of the topics covered. As part of your independent learning, you should: Complete all essential reading related to your modules. Explore additional resources and wider reading to deepen your knowledge. Engage with VLE activities, online materials, and learning resources. Review and reflect on your progress and areas for improvement. Plan and prepare for upcoming assessment tasks in good time. Independent study is an important part of your learning journey and will help you develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed for both your assessments and future professional practice. |
| Independent Learning | Tutorial | 1 | A group tutorial to support you and assist in preparing for your module assessment will be scheduled. During the session, you will have the opportunity to discuss the assessment requirements, explore ideas, ask questions, and clarify any areas you may be unsure about. The tutorial is designed to help you develop a clearer understanding of the assessment expectations, including the marking criteria, academic standards, and how to effectively structure and present your work. It will also provide guidance on approaching the task, planning your work, and applying the knowledge and skills developed throughout the module. Attending the tutorial can help build your confidence, improve your understanding of what is required for successful assessment completion, and support your overall academic development. It also provides an opportunity to engage in discussion, deepen your understanding of module content, and identify areas where you may need further revision or support before submission. |
