Description of module content:

This module focuses on the assessment and care of neonates requiring support within a high dependency and intensive care setting due to prematurity or altered physiology. The module will enable you to develop a detailed knowledge base and critical understanding of neonatal adaptation to extrauterine life during illness, while recognising and responding to the holistic needs of the infants, their families, and carers within this high acuity setting. You will critically engage with the contemporary global evidence base that informs therapeutic interventions, specialist care practices, decision-making, and the management of neonates within critical care settings.Throughout the module, you will examine the principles of Family Integrated Care (FiCare), neonatal neurodevelopmental supportive care, and collaborative multidisciplinary working, You will consider how these approaches shape neonatal management, guide the delivery of care, and impact the experiences of infants and their families within neonatal service provision. The module will also support your professional development through engagement with the principles of compassionate leadership, equality, diversity, and inclusion within contemporary neonatal practice as a specialist neonatal healthcare provider.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Examine the impact of altered homeostasis related to complex physiological and pathophysiological processes in the neonate who requires high dependency or intensive neonatal care.

LO2: Conceptualise knowledge, decision making and clinical practice associated with the acuity level of high dependency and intensive neonatal care.

LO3: Analyse the underpinning evidence on supporting the developmental, emotional, social and educational needs of families/carers in the neonatal setting.

LO4: Critically interpret the global evidence base in relation to neonatal high dependency and intensive care management, treatment options, clinical and neurodevelopmental outcomes.
