Description of module content:

In this continued professional development module, the focus is on neonates who require transitional and special care within a range of setting, together with the needs of their parents, carers and family. The module will develop your neonatal expertise, improve your transferable skills and enhance your career options in the field of maternity care and neonatology.The module will support you to develop your knowledge and understanding of neonatal transition to extrauterine life and common conditions which can interrupt this physiological process. The content will introduce genetics, embryology and fetal development. You will explore the perinatal, maternal and environmental factors that may impact neonatal outcomes during adaptation to extrauterine life. A systems approach to physiology, altered physiology and pathophysiology will be adopted to support you develop assessment skills in relation to neonatal health and wellbeing. You will critically engage with the global evidence-base on neonatal transitional and special care building relevant research skills. The principles of supportive neurodevelopmental care will underpin the management regimes discussed with family integrated care and multidisciplinary approaches at the forefront of your practice.
Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Critically interpretate the impact of altered homeostasis in the neonate requiring transitional and special care including variations in care based on gestational age, diagnosis and/or co-morbidities.

LO2: Critically evaluate transitional and special care management strategies in relation to global evidence base and contemporary research.

LO3: Critically reflect upon professional regulation, ethical conduct and legal principles underpinning neonatal transitional and special care.

LO4: Critically explore the psychosocial, educational and health promotion needs of families/carers of a neonate requiring transitional and special care.

LO5: Appraise the global evidence base relating to the impact of family integrated care and neurodevelopmental supportive care on neonatal outcomes.

Independent Learning Seminar 14 Each second week online seminars will be lecturer-facilitated, but will allow you to explore and apply theory introduced in the provided resources to consolidate your knowledge and understanding, and relate your learning to clinical practice.
Independent Learning CLASS TEST 2 You will have the opportunity to complete short, formative, topic specific classroom tests. These are designed to support your ongoing learning and help you build confidence with key concepts. The purpose of these tests is self assessment to help you identify what you understand well, highlight areas you need to revisit, strengthen your understanding and application of key knowledge.
Independent Learning Guided independent study 60 For each study week a curated set of reading materials, recorded lectures, and topic-specific resources are available on your virtual learning platform. These are designed to support and deepen your understanding of the week’s topic. You are expected to engage with the essential key readings prior to seminars. This preparation will help you participate more confidently and meaningfully in the seminar discussions, to explore and apply the material to management strategies.
Independent Learning Guided independent study 124 Throughout the trimester, you are expected to complete the essential reading and regularly reflect on the learning from the taught sessions. You are also encouraged to explore topics further by engaging with wider reading of the evidence base and make use of virtual learning activities and resources. This will help consolidate your knowledge and understanding and make stronger connections between theory and practice.

Portfolio 100 1~2~3~4~5 Week 11 , WORDS= 3500 words You will formulate 2 Professional Development Activities (PDAs) (1750 words each ) which are short pieces of academic written work on selected neonatal topics of your choice. These should be evidence-based summaries of key neonatal conditions relevant to transitional and special care. Each PDA requires you to define the chosen condition; describe the clinical presentation ; outline aetiology and risk factors; discuss the physiology and pathophysiology and summarise evidence based management. Include integration of family focused care. This activity is designed to support the development of your theoretical and clinical knowledge and understanding, guide application of theory to neonatal practice and stimulate critical thinking and clinical reasoning.
