Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach: |
The delivery of this module is structured in two principal streams:1. Lectures and seminars are delivered in three three-week blocks followed by the submission of a task. Lectures will introduceyou to the principal concepts and idioms of Eurpoean music history from around 1790 to around 1980 (LO1), and to the work ofsome of the principal composers of the period (LO3). Seminars (around 10 students per seminar) will focus on techniques ofharmony and counterpoint that underpin the understanding of the music of the period (LO4) and will include the practicalapplication of this understanding in notated tasks (LO5).2. An additional hour-long lecture every week will alternate between an essay skills class and an anthology listening class. Theclass in essay writing skills will allow you to more effectively articulate your understanding of the period and will support yoursubmissions for Component 1 (LO1,2,3,4). The anthology listening class will focus on developing skills in analytical listeningthrough the awareness of textures and expressive features (LO2,3,4).Revision sessions in the final week of teaching will bring all of these strands together and allow for general advice andfeedback to be given in advance of the final summative submission.
For each of the first two blocks of lectures, a formative written assessment of 500 words directly connected to the class content, supported by the anthology listening classes, will be set.Similarly, for each of the first two blocks of seminars, a formative harmony and counterpoint task directly connected to the classcontent will be set.The feedback on these formative elements will then allow you to revise your work prior to their submission in the summativeassessment at the end of the module.
A portfolio of writing assignments and a portfolio of harmony and counterpoint assignments are submitted at the end of this module and form the two summative components. The portfolios will comprise revised versions of the formative assignments already submitted during the course of the trimester with the addition of an extra assignment. For component 1 (written assignments), this will comprise a 1000 word essay. For component 2 (harmony and counterpoint assignments), this will comprise a more extended task.
