Description of module content:

Within this module, musicology (the study of music) is taken to be a broad umbrella topic which includes the history of music, the study of music in its cultural context (ethnomusicology), the psychology of music, and aspects of political, philosophical, and analytical study.
In lectures you will study a range of topics which will include questioning core assumptions about music and its meaning, historical perspectives on and functional contexts of music.
In dedicated sessions you will listen to and discuss a range of musical styles, genres, and idioms and develop your vocabulary to reflect this diversity.
In seminars you will explore the harmony and counterpoint that underpins much of the musical culture of the West.

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: Demonstrate an awareness of a range of disciplines and perspectives relating to the study of music;

LO2: Respond to a diverse mixture of musical styles, traditions, and genres;

LO3: Recall appropriate vocabulary employed in the discussion of specific musical styles, traditions, and genres;

LO4: Reproduce specific harmonic and contrapuntal techniques underpinning common musical practices.
