Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
Every fortnight you will attend a performance class in which you will enhance your skills to give peer feedback which will demonstrate your understanding of musicianship skills (LO2), technical details specific to individual instruments (LO1), and presentation skills (LO5). In these classes you will take it in turns to perform for your peers and receive on the spot feedback regarding expression (LO4), the fine tuning of specific musical details (LO2), and your awareness of performance etiquette (LO5). In addition, these classes will be an opportunity to discuss issues of style in musical performance (LO3) through demonstration and through watching video footage of experienced professionals. All performances will be videoed allowing individuals to review and critique their own performances at a later date.
Every other week you will attend either a small group class (four hours across the two trimesters) or a one-to-one lesson (eight hours across the two trimesters) with a specialist teacher for your instrument who will oversee your study of specific technical skills (LO1) and refine your musicianship skills in detail (LO2). They will assign you appropriate repertoire which will give them opportunities to teach you appropriate stylistic interpretation (LO3), as well as developing your ability to employ expressive gestures (LO4).

Formative Assessment:
You will perform in the performance class at least once during each trimester and individual performances will be critiqued and assessed formatively by the class tutor and by your peers.
At the end of trimester one there will be a short formative performance exam of one piece to familiarise you with the experience and to provide you with more formal formative feedback that will enable you to refine your skills for your final summative assessment.

Summative Assessment:
You will play a short programme of around 15 minutes duration that should include a minimum of three contrasted works selected in consultation with your specialist instrumental tutor. This assessment will be carried out in performance conditions although an audience will not be present beyond the examiners.
