Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
Your taught content for this module will principally take place in practical sessions (Weeks 2-6 and 8-12) which will be divided between conducting/directing and keyboard skills. In conducting classes (1 hour per week) you will learn the basics of a clear technique, and employ simple gestures to shape phrases and lead an interpretation (LO1,2). In discussion, you will explore what makes a successful choir performance and the role that the conductor plays within this (LO1). You will examine specific scores to identify potential problems and effective strategies to address them (LO4).
In your keyboard skills classes (1 hour per week) you will develop appropriate techniques of improvisation that will support specific choral groupings (LO3). You will be introduced to specific techniques that will help address ensemble issues through voicing and gestural shaping (LO4).

Formative Assessment:
Throughout the module you will receive feedback on your practical skills but there will be two formative assessments to enhance your learning experience and prepare you for the summative assessments.
You will have the chance to demonstrate your skills in both directing and accompaniment half-way through the module, which will familiarise you with the format of the final assessment.
You will also submit a marked-up score which will clearly identify your strategy for conducting and leading a choir, which will inform your final summative assessment.

Summative Assessment:
The summative assessment for this module is a 10 minute practical exam incorporating examples of conducting/directing and keyboard accompaniment of a style of choral music selected by the student. The weekend before the examination, the notation for the realisation of the accompaniment will be made available to the student as a take-away paper.
