Description of module content:

This module introduces learners to fundamental concepts of music education e.g. 1-1 instrumental lessons, workshops, group classes etc. Through exploration of educational theories and analysis of practice you will explore key pedagogic concepts and topics to develop your knowledge and understanding of the links between learning, teaching, and assessment. Practical exercises are used to support your development and understanding as you begin to develop teaching approaches in your specialist area. You will have the opportunity to apply your learning in a series of practical settings where you can test out your teaching practice and receive feedback on your approach. Through analysis of your own teaching you are encouraged to develop your critical self-reflection and develop a reflexive approach to music education to enhance and adapt your teaching for various contexts and groups. Observation of teaching is undertaken in a structured format, and you will keep a reflective journal of observations made and conclusions reached, underpinned and consolidated by engagement with current research in music education. You will take on a pupil to teach who wishes to study your principal study and work with them for a minimum of six lessons. Throughout this module you will be expected to keep a reflective journal that details your teaching practice. This will include: the lesson plans for each of your 1-1s including reflection on successes and challenges, and personal reflection on feedback from the formative learning experiences.

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: apply theoretically informed approaches to the practice of teaching.
LO2: design and implement effective teaching and learning strategies which utilise both independent and collaborative approaches where appropriate.
LO3: analyse, critically reflect upon, and develop your teaching practice within the contexts of current research and best practice.
LO4: interpret and evaluate approaches to teaching within an observational setting.
