Description of module content:

This module will consolidate and advance your technical knowledge and skills in performance, composition and/or production. You will explore function and manipulation of frequency, movement, space and texture through the lens of these three disciplines. This will include items such as; pitch, intonation and EQ (frequency); phrasing, mixing and functional harmony (space and movement); FX, onsets, voicing (texture). Through exploration of these three disciplines you will hone your technique in the creation of outputs that meet a creative end goal you have set yourself. At the beginning of the module you will determine the balance of your focus and assessment, as percentage weightings, across these three disciplines (performance, production, composition) *. You may focus on one, two, or all three of these disciplines. You will hone specific skills relating to the discipline or disciplines on which you have chosen to focus and demonstrate these in meeting a creative end goal that you will set. Bi-weekly lectures and/or workshops will explore musical concepts, taking into consideration the interaction and connectivity of composition, production and performance. These will alternate with discipline-specific seminars or tutorials, which focus on techniques relevant to the concept explored in the previous week. Attendance at discipline-specific tutorials will be determined by the balance of focus and assessment you have negotiated at the beginning of the module.* Note that students wishing to receive 1:1 tuition for performance specialisms (drums, bass, voices, keys, or guitar) must have focused on principal instrument studies in performance based modules on this program or equivalent levels of study. They must weigh performance as their primary focus, with a minimum of 60% if focusing on two disciplines, and 40% if focusing on three.
