Description of module content:

This module will consolidate and enhance your technical and problem solving skills in performance, composition and production. You will explore utilisation of technical skill when meeting parameters surrounding creative parameters that take in:1/ Scene – For example enhancing atmosphere and/or sense of time, place, and action through music2/ Narrative – For example telling story and complementing its development through music3/ Perspective – For example emphasising and arguing a point of view, theme, or opinion through music4/ Abstraction – For example interpreting an idea or stimulus through music5/ Distortion – For example twisting and deforming a theme or idea through musicAt the beginning of the module you will determine the balance of your focus and assessment, in 1/3 blocks, across these three disciplines (performance, production, composition) *. You may focus on one or two of these disciplines. You will hone specific skills relating to the discipline or disciplines on which you have chosen to focus and demonstrate these when meeting set parameters for a creative end goal.Bi-weekly lectures and/or workshops will explore musical concepts, taking into consideration the interaction and connectivity of composition, production and performance. These will alternate with discipline specific seminars or tutorials, whichfocus on student led explorations of applied technique when realising parametersexplored in the previous week. Attendance at discipline-specific tutorials will be determined by the balance of focus and assessment you have negotiated at the beginning of the module.* Note that students wishing to receive 1:1 tuition for performance specialisms (drums, bass, voices, keys, or guitar) must have focused on principal instrument studies in performance based modules on this program or equivalent levels of study. They must weigh performance as their primary focus, with a minimum of 2/3 if focusing on two disciplines.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Determine and demonstrate the use of discipline related techniques when working to meet set creative parameters in music production, composition and/or performance.

LO2: Critically reflect on the use of discipline related techniques, and evaluate end product, when working to meet set creative parameters in music production, composition and/or performance.

LO3: Realise creative output through synthesis and application of knowledge and skills.

LO4: Challenge, through self-inquiry, the use of technique when working to meet set parameters in music production, composition and/or performance.

Student Activity (Notional Equivalent Study Hours (NESH))
Mode of activityLearning & Teaching ActivityNESH (Study Hours)NESH Description
Face To Face Seminar 12 You will actively participate in seminars in which techniques and their application will be explored, discussed, analysed and put into practice in group and/or individual activities, performances or presentations
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 12 You will actively participate in classes and workshops in which musical concepts and their realisation will be discussed, interpreted and enhanced through group and/or individual research, analysis, activity, and discussion.
Online Guided independent study 160 You will work on a portfolio of creative works independently or in collaboration with peers. The completion of this portfolio will put discipline relevant technique and concepts in to practical application
Independent Learning Guided independent study 12 You will actively engage with Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) presentations and tasks provided on Moodle as an introduction to core concepts of discipline relevant technique and intent.
Face To Face Tutorial 4 You will actively engage in tutorials, forums and peer critique sessions, utilising principals of ‘plussing’ in the critique of your own work, and the work of your peers on the module. You will identify areas for improvement individually and as a peer group, and devise strategies to contribute to your individual and collective development

Assessment
Type of Assessment Weighting % LOs covered Week due Length in Hours/Words Description
Report 50 1~2~3~4 Week 9 , WORDS= 1000 words + You will submit a critical reflection and evaluation of ideas you are exploring in interpreting and exploring the creative parameters/lenses set in the module with a focus on your weighted specialism(s). You will review and evaluate progress, process and, if relevant, collaboration with reference to relevant research and experiments/drafts. Your write up will be supported by relevant artefcacts (i.e. recorded or notated excerpts of musical experiments and work in progress.)
Portfolio 50 1~2~3~4 Exam Period , WORDS= 30 minutes You will create a portfolio of work, relevant to your specialism(s) of performance, composition or production, encompassing a minimum of three of the five creative parameters/lenses explored in this module.
