Description of module content:

Much of the module content will be specific to the topic selected by you and guided by your supervisor. Teaching includes: 1/ Lectures and seminars on the research process and on the specific tools and frameworks employed to help you manage your project (i.e. dissertation research or practice-led research in music), 2/ Group tutorials where you will discuss your work with your peers and your supervisor, 3/ One-to-one tutorials in which you will bring specific problems and questions to your supervisor as well as receiving feedback on formative milestones designed to give you structure throughout the project, and 4/ Work-in-progress presentations and forums where you will critique, inspire, and encourage your peers. The majority of the work on this module will be driven by you, and you will be empowered to work independently, critically, and innovatively as a learner and creator.

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: Integrate research and organisation skills in an autonomous workflow in order to manage a substantial project;
LO2: Critically reflect on the placement of your project as research within a given field;
LO3: Appraise and criticise the literature (which may include scores, recordings, or other artefacts as well as written sources) of the field to which you are contributing;
LO4: Through the most appropriate medium, compose a response to research aims and questions devised in reaction to your literature search and via your project-specific research processes.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
Teaching and learning takes the following forms:
You will attend lectures and seminars that will build awareness of key research frameworks, support the basics of undertaking a large research project (dissertation research or practice-led research in music), and prepare the groundwork for assessment (LOs 1, 2, 3, 4). Early in trimester one you will be paired with a supervisor and a study group. You will actively participate in group tutorials, chaired by your supervisor, in which techniques and their application will be explored, discussed, and critically reflected (LOs 2, 3 4). Supervisors will also give you one-to-one tutorials for individual feedback and discussion on your project. You will actively engage with Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) support materials and tasks provided on Moodle as an introduction and/or expansion on core research concepts (LOs 1, 3). You will actively engage in work-in-progress presentations and forums, reinforcing the development of your research and organisation skills, utilising principals of ‘plussing’ in the critique of your own work, and the work of your peers on the module. You will identify areas for improvement individually and as a peer group, and devise strategies to contribute to your individual and collective development while consolidating your research project (LOs 1, 2, 3, 4).

Formative Assessment:
In week five of trimester one you will submit a 200-word summary of your research project idea and intentions. This summary will provide the necessary information to pair you with a supervisor and a study group. Feedback on this summary will be offered by your supervisor and will be formative in nature.

In week 15 of trimester one, and in consultation with your supervisor, you will submit a preliminary piece of writing (c. 1,500–2,000 words) that can become part and/or inform your final submission (Examples: Research report, Preliminary literature review, Part of chapter/section, Short artefact with supporting written document etc.). This piece of writing will also be accompanied by a time-plan managing research and time moving forward. Feedback on this formative element will be offered by your supervisor, allowing you to revise and to progress your research project to its final format.

By week 11 of trimester two, you will prepare a work-in-progress presentation, to be presented to peers and the extended teaching team for peer and tutor feedback. Feedback will follow principles of ‘plussing’, in which critique is given dispassionately and constructively, and criticism is always followed up with an offer of a solution, addition or amendment.

During your study group & one-to-one tutorials throughout the year, and under your supervisor’s guidance, you will be designing formative milestones allowing you to develop your research idea and to consolidate your research project.

Summative Assessment:
Final Year Project:
· Dissertation research project in music (c. 10,000 words)
OR
· Practice-led research project in music (artefact equivalent of c. 30 minutes plus written commentary of c. 5,000 words)

In week 15 of trimester two you will submit a completed project, which you have devised, that reflects your research interests. Your project will demonstrate your engagement with, and synthesis of, your proposed research aims, methods and methodologies. The skills gained for this assessment contribute to the realisation of LOs 1, 2, 3, and 4.
