Description of module content:

In this module you will continue your growth as a professional musician with a focus on your chosen specialism. Lessons and/or tutorials with specialist staff will support your continuing technical and creative development with a focus on your developing artist identity, persona, or brand. In workshops and lectures, you will also be encouraged to look at how your identity as a professional musician is created and articulated through performance, advertising, and social media participation. You will develop materials, which will include recordings and a reflective commentary, which reflect your developing artistic brand, persona, and/or identity. You will carry out market and stakeholder analysis for a specific musical project and look at how strategic plans can support the success of projects and create your own in order to prepare you for life as a successful professional musician.* Note that students wishing to follow the performance thread in this module must have completed relevant level 9 modules with a primary focus on performance.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Critically reflect on processes and products bound up with the identity construction of individual musicians and ensembles/bands/venues/festivals.

LO2: Assess the integration of materials, recordings, and artefacts that promote a specific musical output or product.

Face To Face Tutorial 4 You will receive support in developing your specialist focus for the module (performance, composition, production) from a specialist tutor.
Face To Face Lecture 6 A series of lectures on identity and persona formation will provide you with initial questions and a framework to consider how you are looking at these questions within your own practice.
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 6 A session devoted to your specialism within this module (performance, composition, production) will be hosted by the strand leader for your specialism to support the development of your reflective portfolio.
Independent Learning Guided independent study 24 Over the course of the trimester you will be completing the different elements of your portfolios through the completion of formative tasks and the collection of materials (photographs, mood boards, videos, audio recordings, etc.) for your reflective portfolio. You should expect to spend around two hours a week on this work.
Independent Learning GROUPIND_STUDY 6 As part of this module you will be expected to provide feedback to your peers on a series of formative submissions which feed into the completed strategic portfolio.
Online Guided independent study 148 Continued work developing your specialist practice and researching core topics of this module (identity exploration and creation, persona building, audience analysis, marketing strategies, etc.) will dominate your independent study during the course of this module.
Face To Face Lecture 6 Lectures will specifically support the development of your strategic portfolio introducing you to core concepts as well as encouraging you to engage critically with project planning techniques and tools in order to make them work for you.

Oral Assessment 100 1~2~3~4~5 Exam Period HOURS= 30 minutes You will attend a viva (a discussion between you and two examiners) in which you will discuss and answer questions on your musical identity, how you have constructed a persona, and your strategy for promoting an event.Prior to the viva, your examiners will look over your two portfolios (detailed in the formative section of this descriptor) and prepare questions based on your submissions. Questions will seek to draw out more information in regards to the information that you have submitted and will encourage you to clarify, extrapolate, verify, and/or develop on aims, intentions or descriptions of the portfolio contents.The viva and supporting portfolios should address the following criteria/skills/concepts against which you will be assessed:Critical thought (evidence that you are researching and questioning ideas and strategies when developing your portfolios);Evaluation (evidence that you are aware of where your strengths and weaknesses lie, and are able to adapt and strategise around these);Flexibility (evidence that you are able to respond effectively to challenges, and to the questioning of the examiners);Integration (evidence that you have a clear idea of how the various aspects of your professional life, the specific components of the portfolios, and the ideas that you have explored within them fit together);Inclusivity (evidence that you are considering how your musical activity and development sit within a broader context);Professional (evidence that you are operating at a professional level, e.g. setting SMART objectives (Specific, Measurable, Aligned, Realistic, Time-based));Evidence (evidence that your ideas and strategies are embedded in relevant research).You will be graded according to the level of engagement/execution you demonstrate when applying the relevant skill/concept.
