Description of module content:

You will be introduced to ethical theories and principles relevant to health care; these include utilitarianism, deontology, the ethics of care, values-based care and the bio-ethical principles. Other topics addressed in the module are responsibility and accountability, professional regulation, record keeping, consent, refusal of treatment, confidentiality, patient rights, and restraint,. Adults with incapacity and other related issues, such as, the use and abuse of power, and advocacy are also considered. Relevant professional, ethical and legal implications will be related to all areas considered in the module.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to
LO1: Critically examine professional, ethical and legal issues relevant to contemporary healthcare practice.
LO2: Apply ethical theories and principles to healthcare situations arising from practice.
LO3: Critically reflect upon professional regulation and accountability and how this relates to practice.
LO4: Provide a rationale for the importance of rights for individuals and groups in terms of healthcare provision.
LO5: Evaluate personal and professional values underpinning compassionate care and person-centred approaches to care.
LO6: Using practice-based case-studies and scenarios, provide evidence of ability to develop rationale(s) and apply relevant professional, ethical and legal theory to healthcare practice.
