Description of module content:

This module will introduce you to the principles of effective and facilitative advanced communication skills. You will explore this topic through discussion, simulation while reviewing a number of key theoretical themes to effective communication for example eliciting patients feelings and concerns, therapeutic relationship and building rapport, patient centred, shared decision making, blocking behaviour, information giving and assessment of understanding, E-health communication tools, holistic assessment to enhance future care planning. As well as the theory and skills when confronted with collusion; breaking bad news; denial; anxiety; multi professional teamwork; anger and intense emotions.

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: Examine current literature and research concerning communication in relation to challenging situations.
LO2: Apply knowledge of communication processes in complex clinical situations
LO3: Demonstrate critical reflective skills and self-awareness by appraising own communication skills
LO4: Evaluate communication strategies within the multidisciplinary team.

LO5: Debate current approaches and communication skills to support people across the patient journey including primary, secondary, social and voluntary sector
