Description of module content:

In this module you will study:
Systematic review of normal anatomy and physiology of the newborn
Maternal, family and perinatal history taking and their relevance to the routine examination of the newborn
Development and mastery of the skills necessary to perform a newborn examination
Recognition of abnormalities and deviations from the norm
Risk assessment and decision making skills
Referral pathways – acknowledging sphere of practice and identification of need to seek assistance from the multi-disciplinary team
Communication skills and inter-professional team work.

By completion of this module you will acquire the skills and knowledge to undertake the routine examination of the newborn. This module will allow you to assess the health and well-being of the newborn and recognise any deviation from the norm. Clinical decision making will be developed relating to clinical findings and liaising with the multi-disciplinary team.

LO2: Critically assess any potential deviations from normal that may be found in the newborn.
LO3: Display mastery in skills required to perform a routine examination of the newborn in relation to the Best Practice Statement.
LO4. Rationalise the use of referral pathways within the multi-disciplinary team in the event of abnormal findings.
