Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
Observing and practising under direct supervision of mentors while on placement (LOs 1-4); supporting development of numeracy skills via on-line practice / tests and voluntary drop-in tutorials (LO5).

The learning outcomes of this practice module are informed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council Standards for pre-registration nurse education and include practice competencies and essential skills clusters (NMC 2010) and are contained within the Scottish Ongoing Achievement Record. Normally, there will be 320 practice hours undertaken in this module.


Formative Assessment:
Week 12, (trimester 1) – interim placement practice review with mentor
Week 25 (week 7, trimester 2) – practise online Multi Choice Questions (MCQ) numeracy test, format as per summative.


Summative Assessment:
Weeks 34-35 (weeks 14-15, TR2) – Summative online numeracy MCQ test (LO5)
Weeks 33 (week 13, TR2) – Summative placement assessment (LOs 1-4).

Description of module content:

Preparation for and attendance at initial 10 weeks of clinical practice; development of numeracy skills.

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: Practice in accordance with The Code: Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour (Nursing Midwifery Council 2015) for nurses and midwives to develop core professional values of honesty, integrity and without discrimination.
LO2: Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills which are evidence based, safe, effective, compassionate and respectful.
LO3: Participate in a range of essential nursing skills to meet the physical and mental health needs of individuals, of all ages under the supervision of a health and/or social care professional.
LO4: Appreciate the role of the nurse working in collaboration with other fields of practice and disciplines to promote a culture of safety and high quality of care.
LO5: Develop competence in numeracy skills related to nursing practice.
