Description of module content:

Working effectively with others is an important part of your role as a nurse, regardless of the setting or field of practice in which you work. Not everyone you will work with during your career will be a Registered Nurse. Practicing effectively means learning how to work in teams of health and social care professionals each with their own knowledge-base, perspectives, values and standards of practice and behaviour. In this Module, we’ll explore the concept and practice of inter-professional working. We’ll start by encouraging you to reflect on your developing professional identity as a nurse (LO1) before exploring the roles and responsibilities of the range of other health and social care professionals and organisations that support care in community and hospital settings (LO2). We’ll explore the unique contribution that you as a nurse make to clinical decision-making and care planning, alongside the vital roles of other health and social care professionals like social workers, housing officers, health visitors and allied healthcare professionals (AHPs). This will lead into discussion of rights-based approaches to healthcare, health justice, and the important role of nurses as advocates at an individual, community and societal level (LO3), as well as examination of the policy and legislation that shapes how professionals work together to safeguard others (LO4).

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Locate your role as a nurse within inter-professional health and social care teams.

LO2: Explain the role of health and social care professionals in the safe and effective care of others.

LO3: Discuss rights-based approaches to health and social care and the importance of advocacy at an individual, community and societal level.

LO4: Examine policy and legislation that shapes inter-professional working in health and social care to safeguard others.
