Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
Learning & teaching methods including their alignment to LOs
The module uses a variety of learning and teaching methods including VLE (online) (LO1-5), face-to face tutorials (LO 1, 3, 4), problem-based learning (LO4), group discussions (LO1-5), literature searching (LO2, 5). You will be required to learn independently as well as within your class group. Face-to-face activity within the module will take place in week 1 and during discussion board sessions within the online section of the module. Feedback will be carried out by the tutor, your peers and yourself - a structured feedback format will be provided to help you to be constructive to yourself and your peers.

The module handbook and online support materials will provide you with support with your learning within this module. For example, study skills, ground rules for face-to-face and online group discussions, how to use online discussion methods, and other avenues of support available to you as an Edinburgh Napier University student.

Embedding of employability/PDP/scholarship skills
The module is designed to allow you to identify an area of care management that you would like to develop and change. You can apply the theoretical aspects of the module to your own practice area using models and theories. This module will encourage you to reflect, use your skills and knowledge of your own area of practice, as well as utilising new knowledge and skills associated with the module content.

Formative Assessment:
Assessment (formative and summative)
Examples of formative assessment and feedback includes:
o Take part in a group discussion in relation to the care management that you consider to have worked effectively, and not so effectively, within your own area of practice (LO1)
o Using a literature searching exercise, identify the main sources of evidence associated with theories and models (LO2)
o Use peer and tutor feedback to identify theories and models that you could use within your own area and discuss your rationale for their use within your own area of practice (LO3 &4)
o Identify your case study and use peer feedback to identify theories and models that could be used to enhance care management (LO3&4)
o Using an online discussion board, brainstorm the types of improvements you would expect to see and experience as a result of employing your chosen model and/or theory (LO5)
The above examples will use a variety of self, peer and tutor feedback using face-to-face and online methods of engagement with you

Summative Assessment:
Summative assessment is in 2 parts:

Assignment 1
LOs 1-4 are assessed via an academic essay, focussing on the application of a model and/or theory to your own area of practice, and critically reflecting upon the care management provided. This is weighted at 80% of the overall mark, and has a word limit of 4000 words. Criteria for this assessment are provided in your module handbook.

Assignment 2
LO 5 is assessed via a report, focussing on the healthcare improvement that could/has taken place as a result of you undertaking the exercise in assignment 1. This is weighted at 20% of the overall mark, and has a word limit of 800 words. Criteria for this assessment are provided in your module handbook. This report can be submitted as a written and/or audio-recorded report.

Description of module content:

The module considers a range of theories and models. These theories and models include seminal work such as Roper, Logan and Tierney, Orem's Model of Self Care, as well as more contemporary theories and models such as Care Pathways and Decision Algorithms, incorporating social, politicoeconomic, ethical and moral, physical, spiritual, health, environmental and nursing philosophy. Introduction to healthcare improvement methodologies, literature searching, application of relevant theories and models, care management.

LO2: Examine theories and models used in nursing practice.
LO3: Provide a rationale for using a model and/or theory for your own area of practice
LO4: Using a case study, describe the application of this model and/or theory to your own area of practice.
LO5: Apply knowledge of healthcare improvement by suggesting changes to care management that would enhance the care experience of the service user.
