Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
The teaching approach for this module is fully online. Students will work in on-line tutorial groups facilitated by the teaching team members. The teaching activities will include engaging in on-line lectures, tutorials, podcasts and multi-media resources that encourage a discursive and interactive approach to learning.
The online tutorials and online activities will focus on management and leadership theory and styles in contemporary healthcare practice (LO 1, 3). There will be scenario work within the online activities and online tutorial teaching to provide a platform to explore how nurses work in partnership to promote safety and well-being and to evaluate the effectiveness of leadership styles (LO 2, 4, 5). The role of nurses in responding to adverse incidents in practice will be examined and discussed utilising key health care enquiries and reports over current years as well as making use of practice experience to illuminate the learning and to provide authentic examples to reflect and explore leadership in nursing (LO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

Formative Assessment:
The student will participate in an online discussion to provide peer review and feedback on an aspect of the student’s project planning submitted in week.

Summative Assessment:
Project: LO 1-5 This project and action plan will be 7,000 words (equivalent) and will be submitted in week 14.

Description of module content:

On this module you will explore the principles of the following topic areas that will be explored in the context of your area of nursing: Clinical Leadership; Clinical Governance; Patient Safety, Change Management and Risk Management. You will also explore partnership and team working and the associated essential communications skills that support effective leadership and effective partnerships.
There will be opportunities to consider the role of the nurse in relation to teaching and learning, inter-professional education, clinical support and supervision and development will be explored. Management style and leadership qualities that are effective in health and social care settings will be discussed and theoretical aspects applied and explored in the context of your practice experience.
