Description of module content:

The focus within this module is the well-being of older people. Global demographics will be discussed in relation to the worldwide growing population of older people and strategies promoting healthy ageing will be explored. Older people and health care will be contextualized from a local and global perspective and you will be encouraged to use health care related policies, legislation and strategies to examine the importance of individualized approaches to care. This will include consideration of the often complex healthcare needs of older people and the impact of the ageing population on health related services. You will explore theories which direct and inform care practice such as nursing theories and those associated with ageing from a physical, psychological, social and cultural aspect. You will consider how care is best planned and delivered in order to achieve optimum outcomes and quality of life for older people. Prevention and management of health conditions commonly associated with older age such as dementia, frailty and delirium will also be discussed. The module will utilise a strengths based approach to working with cohorts of older people to maximise independence and promote self-care. Case examples will be used to increase your opportunities for application to practice.
