Description of module content:

This module will provide you with the opportunity to learn about health promotion within the general population and within and through the nursing workforce. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and improve their health. The module will focus on the factors that influence health, including (but not limited to): sexuality and sexual practices; spirituality; psychological factors, loss & bereavement; mental health and well-being; environmental factors; cultural factors; food and diet; exercise (effects / lack of); smoking, alcohol and substance use. You will explore the main issues and priorities for public health: e.g., obesity, sexual health, mental health, drug & alcohol use; screening programmes (e.g. breast, cervical and bowel cancer); resource allocation; and workforce health. You will consider health inequalities and opportunities for behaviour change, and the importance of media in communicating health improvement strategies.

Face To Face Lecture 12 In person lectures will allow you to explore and apply theory introduced during the lectures to consolidate your knowledge and understanding.
Face To Face Tutorial 12 2-hour group tutorials will be offered focused on interactive discussion of module learning content, drawing upon key themes linked with the Learning Outcomes. The formative assessment task will involve a peer feedback session as part of one tutorial. This is intended to support all students in the tutorial to learn from each other, fostering an assessment for learning approach.
Online GROUPIND_STUDY 30 You will work in groups on specific topics to prepare for seminars, where you will discuss and analyse research studies related to the module learning content, and to help prepare for the assessment.
Online Guided independent study 128 Throughout the trimester, you are expected to structure in time to reflect upon the learning you have undertaken in your scheduled sessions and to complete your essential reading. You are encouraged to read more widely around the topics you are studying and engage in learning activities and resources. You will need to ensure that you have sufficient time to prepare and plan for your assessment tasks.
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 6 1-hour in person workshops will be facilitated weekly with guest speakers specialising in health promotion. This will involve guest speakers from within the School of Health & Social Care with expertise in public health, as well as external speakers.
Face To Face Seminar 6 Each week, a 1-hour in-person seminar will be provided, during which students will have the opportunity to review and analyse a research study relevant to this week's topic of learning.
Independent Learning Lecture 6 There will be three recorded online lectures to support students with preparing for the module assessment. Academic Skills: Academic writing for media resource, development and formatting of the resource, the use of images, citations and references. Library Services: Supporting students with literature searching for the module learning and assessment. Learning Technology: Accessing and navigating appropriate technology to create the media resource.
