Description of module content:

General issues in psychological research: aim and scope of research in psychology; ethics; communicating research findings.
Qualitative approaches in psychology: qualitative vs. quantitative approaches; collecting qualitative data; analysing qualitative data (e.g. discourse analysis, IPA, content analysis, grounded theory).
Quantitative methodology: experimental design (between- vs. within-groups designs, mixed designs); interpreting experimental results; quasi-experiments; observation and coding; correlational research designs.
Statistics & SPSS: revision of basic statistical principles and techniques (null hypothesis testing; probability; t-tests; correlation; chi-square; one-way ANOVA); advanced statistical methods (e.g. factorial ANOVA; simple linear regression; multiple regression); using SPSS for analysis.
Preparation for the Honours Project

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: Design, execute and write up the findings of a quantitative research project in psychology.
LO2: Design, execute and write up the findings of a qualitative research project in psychology.
LO3: Select a statistical test appropriate to the research question/hypothesis at hand.
LO4: Analyse data using the most appropriate statistical test in SPSS, and interpret the result.
LO5: Evaluate the comparative strengths and weaknesses of a range of psychological research methods.
