Description of module content:

This module provides an introduction to two applied areas of psychology, namely health psychology and clinical psychology. You will learn about the role of behaviour, cognitions and emotions in health, illness and healthcare. You will learn about theoretical models used in health and clinical psychology and how those models are used to inform interventions to promote positive health outcomes.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Apply knowledge of the role of behaviour, cognitions and emotion, in health, illness and healthcare

LO2: Examine the relationship between theory and research and how theory and research are applied to real world health problems

Online Guided independent study 48 You will engage with online materials designed to prepare you for and support the in-person teaching sessions. Online materials might include: recorded short lectures, journal articles, small group tasks, theory based self-reflection exercises.
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 24 A mixture of seminar and workshop type activities will be delivered in-person. These sessions are designed to enable you to experience the evidence base you are engaged with. These session will also directly support your assessments and will contribute to feedback on assessments.
Online Guided independent study 128 You will be expected to engage with the peer reviewed evidence base from health and clinical psychology and behavioural medicine more broadly. You will receive guidance about quality markers for evidence, and the peer review process. You will also receive guidance towards key papers of historical importance.

Report 50 1~2~3~4 Week 5 , WORDS= 1000 You will be given a 'prescription regimen' you will attempt to adhere to over the course of 10 consecutive days. The regimen will involve 3 dummy tablets each of which has an increasingly challenging dosing regimen. You will record your adherence and the barriers and facilitators to your adherence. You will submit an annotated graph of your adherence together with a theory based reflection of your experience (up to 1000 words). Note: you will be asked to purchase sweets or dried fruits/nuts suitable for you to use as dummy tablets.
Report 50 1~2~3~4 Week 11 , WORDS= 1500 You will be given a description of a clinical psychology case. You will consider the information given and produce an assessment and formulation and intervention plan. You will submit your assessment and formulation and the accompanying treatment plan.
