Description of module content:

Historical & conceptual perspectives in personality: psychodynamic, behaviourist, humanistic/ phenomenological, cognitive/social-cognitive, and trait approaches; personality assessment.Historical & conceptual perspectives in intelligence: intelligence testing & IQ; general factor theories vs. multiple abilities; biological influences on intelligence; environmental and socio-cultural influences on intelligence.Recent developments in individual differences: alternative views of intelligence (e.g. emotional intelligence, multiple intelligences); other individual differences (e.g. creativity; leadership; optimism).

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Contrast the psychological concepts of personality and intelligence from their commonsensical, everyday usage.

LO2: Evaluate approaches to studying and assessing personality (e.g. psychodynamic, behaviourist, humanistic/ phenomenological, cognitive/social-cognitive, and trait approaches).

LO3: Evaluate factor theories of intelligence and demonstrate a sound knowledge of at least one seminal and one contemporary factor theory.

LO4: Critically reflect on recent developments and current debates in the areas of personality and intelligence.

LO5: Critically reflect on the validation and evaluation of a psychometric measure of individual differences.

LO6: Evaluate the role that individual differences plays in areas such as creativity, leadership, optimism, personnel selection, mood and motivation.
