Description of module content:

The module will be taught through a number of learning modes to suit all learning styles; lectures, tutorials and in practical scenarios, covering a number of aspects of skill acquisition pertinent to coaching young footballers outlined in the learning outcomes. You will be introduced to the current literature and underlying theory associated with how skills are learned in a sporting context. This will allow you design and deliver football coaching sessions with children that adequately support their development, associated with their age and stage of learning. You will be encouraged to contrast perspectives around learning theory and share your ideas within a group setting.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Develop an awareness of the main areas of research which encompass motor learning and control within the context of coaching young footballers.

LO2: Gain an appreciation of the cognitive and ecological perspectives in coaching young footballers and the development of technique.

LO3: Apply the theory and practice of skill development, and the retention and transfer associated with motor learning and control in coaching young footballers.

LO4: Engage with and satisfactorily complete the Scottish FA Introduction to Coaching to the standards set by the Scottish FA in respect to the organization's requirements.

Face To Face Lecture 10 In person lectures will be held on this module
Face To Face Tutorial 10 A group tutorial will be offered to explore the practical aspects of coaching and skill acquisition in youth football. This is intended to support you in the tutorial to learn from each other by fostering an assessment for learning approach.
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 30 Weekly practical on-pitch sessions will be conducted by Scottish FA tutors. Practical sessions provides you the opportunity work on your applied coaching skills. These sessions require mandatory attendance under the Scottish FA regulations.
Online Guided independent study 140 Throughout the trimester, you are expected to reflect upon the learning you have undertaken in your scheduled sessions and to complete your essential reading. You are encouraged to read more widely around the topics you are studying and engage in Moodle activities and resources associated with football coaching practice. You will need to ensure that you have sufficient time to prepare and plan for your related tasks

Oral Presentation 100 1~2~3 Week 12 HOURS= 15 minutes 10 minute presentation relating to practice modes followed by 5 minutes question and answer session.The mark you achieve for this component of assessment will form your overall module grade. However, you must pass both components of assessment in order to achieve an overall pass for this module.
Practical Skills Assessment 0 4 Exam Period HOURS= 1 hour The final assessment will involve you undertaking a practical skill assessment in order to provide feedback on your coaching practice. The practical assessment will be assessed by the Scottish FA tutors. This component of assessment is graded on a pass or fail basis. You must pass this component of assessment in order to achieve an overall pass for this module and progress to the next stage of study.
