Description of module content:

The healing process, inflammation, tissue repair & remodelling. Classification of sports injuries. Mechanical characteristics of human tissue and mechanism of injury. Pain physiology and management agents. Management of acute injuries. Overuse injuries. Overtraining syndrome, muscle injury & DOMS. Prevention of injuries. Injuries in specific sports. Principles of rehabilitation & maintaining fitness whilst injured.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to
LO1: Describe the epidemiology of injuries associated with a range of selected sports (e.g. Rugby, Volleyball, Swimming, Golf, etc).
LO2: Identify the cause and assess the severity of an injury from selected case study scenarios.
LO3: Explain and identify the process of inflammation, healing and tissue repair.
LO4: Show an understanding of mechanical characteristics of human tissue and their responses to loading.
LO5: Indicate an awareness of pain physiology, theories of pain control and the mechanism of action of different management modalities.
LO6: Demonstrate an understanding of functional anatomy and an ability to assess anatomical structures pre and post injury.
LO7: Illustrate an understanding of the management of an acute sports injury including comprehension of the therapeutic uses of ice, heat, strapping, sports massage, TENS and the use of topical creams and sprays.
