Description of module content:

Over the course of this module, you will develop an appreciation of the science behind the craft of coaching and build the technical skills required in the planning, preparation and delivery of coaching sessions at youth level. As part of this, you will consider your experiences, values, beliefs and how these may influence your coaching practice. You will consider the importance of effective communication and your coaching behaviours, together with the physical, psychological and social factors that may affect players participation experiences. You will begin to develop the ability to evaluate the effectiveness of their practice and begin to understand and develop the necessary skills required to research, identify, and adopt effective practice methods in relation to the participants experience and environmental demands in youth football. You will also be asked to plan, prepare and deliver linked sessions and develop the ability to evaluate your coaching practice and sessions, through evaluation and participant feedback. During this module you will complete the complete SFA B - youth licence. You must meet the standards set by the Scottish FA and the UEFA conventions in respect to the awards requirements to be awarded the licence.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Apply the knowledge and skills to plan and implement a structured coaching session for youth players that demonstrates an understanding of the underpinning coaching theory for this age and level of player.

LO2: Demonstrate the knowledge and awareness of designing, implementing and assessing practices appropriate to age of players and identify areas for technical and tactical improvement for individuals and team within practices and phases of play.

LO3: Demonstrate an understanding of planning and designing coaching plans and coaching sessions appropriate to the age of players.

LO4: Undertake reflection and evaluation of your own coaching practice.

LO5: Engage with and satisfactorily complete the SFA B Youth-licence and the standards set by the Scottish FA and the UEFA conventions in respect to the awards requirements.

Face To Face Lecture 20 The lectures will be focused on the key topics and theories related to football coaching.
Face To Face Tutorial 24 Tutorials led either by ENU staff members or SFA tutors to facilitate the learning experience of students by promoting reflection. It will also allow students to discuss the assessment tasks and will involve peer to peer feedback while supporting all students in an individualised manner. The purpose of the tutorials is to complement the learning experience associated both with the practical and theoretical elements of the module.
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 66 On-pitch practical sessions led by the SFA tutors focused on the practical element of the module (i.e., SFA B Youth licence)

Oral Presentation 50 1~2~3~4 Week 11 HOURS= 0.3 hours Oral Presentation focused on the coaching approach in trimester 1.The mark you achieve for this component of assessment will form your overall module grade (based on your presentation and reflection). However, you must pass both components of assessment in order to achieve an overall pass for this module.
Reflective Log 50 1~2~3~4 Exam Period , WORDS= 1500 words A reflective essay submitted in trimester 1 to complement the presentation which will also include reflections in relation to the SFA B Youth Licence and the work-based learning hours using a reflective cycle.The mark you achieve for this component of assessment will form your overall module grade (based on your presentation and reflection). However, you must pass both components of assessment in order to achieve an overall pass for this module.
Practical Skills Assessment 0 1~2~3~5 Exam Period HOURS= 0.5 hours The SFA B Youth portfolio will include a number of tasks as outlined by the coaching licence and the observation of a coaching session according to the SFA B Youth objectives. This component of assessment is graded on a pass or fail basis and will be submitted in trimester 2. You must pass this component of assessment in order to achieve an overall pass for this module and progress to the next stage of study.
