Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach: |
The lecture programme aims to develop the students’ ability to problem solve through reflection on research theories. Practical examples and tutorials will aim to develop student discussion and interaction in the context of real life situations and introduce quantitative and qualitative research methods through practice. The assessment aims to develop a practical and theoretically driven approach to the research process enabling students to gain a sound understanding. Students will be introduced to, and be directly assessed on, reviews of current relevant research studies whilst discussing the relative merits of good and poor research processes and study designs and methodologies (LO1 and LO2). Lectures will focus on types of research and the importance of data analysis with a specific focus on the definitions and limitations of techniques (LO1,2,3) with discussions around the scientific bases of evidence based practice in Sport and Exercise Science where contemporary approaches and situations will be evaluated and discussed. Lectures, tutorials and examples will highlight the ethical issues in researching with different populations and techniques with discussions and current examples on acceptable risk and the mitigation of risk factors prominent (LO3). Data analysis, types of statistical investigation and analysis and presentation of data results will be highlighted via face to face lectures and tutorials (LO4). These concepts will be linked to appropriate type of research investigation and directly associated with current examples of research. The cohort will be given weekly exercises to complement the lecture delivery and tutorials allowing them to develop their abilities and enhance their familiarity with research concepts and data management. These will include formulation of ethical standpoints; development of discursive materials to accept or refute hypothesis and practices; practice exercises using given data. Formative assessment occurs through the use of revision/review questions during lectures and in tutorials.Summative assessment will include a written review of literature (week 10), 1 x Multiple Choice Question Class Exam (week 14).
