Description of module content:

This module aims to develop your critical evaluation skills through the assessment of current sport science practices in football. Two main topics that will be explored throughout the module are training and injury management strategies. You will also develop an in-depth understanding of contemporary issues in football and their effect on performance (e.g., menstrual cycle; use of data and technology, training load management). Finally, you will be expected to link theory with practice by proposing, implement and critically appraising a sport science intervention in an applied setting.
Indicative content:
• The use of sport science data to inform practice (e.g., training and match load monitoring and quantification).
• The common injuries in football (e.g., soft tissues, head injuries/concussions etc), causative factors and preventative strategies (i.e., prehab programmes, screening tools).
• Current practice within return from injury, including commonly utilised protocols and treatment modalities.

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: Critically evaluate contemporary sport science issues in football.

LO2: Critically review evidence behind current training and injury management practices in football.

LO3: Appraise the complexities associated with criteria-based decision-making in the return from injury process.

LO4: Design, implement and evaluate a sport science intervention within football.
