Description of module content:

This module will introduce you to theoretical learning, experiences and practical skills relevant to the clinical exercise physiology environment. This will include: familiarity with equipment preparation; safe working practices; preparation and assessment of clients/patients; the ethical, professional and legal constraints associated with this environment; the Clinical Exercise Physiology UK Scope of Practice; referral to other practitioners or organisations; cardiorespiratory and stress-testing; ECG interpretation; NHS and ACSM guidelines; medication and drug interactions.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Apply critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis to forefront issues, such as, ethical, legal and professional standards for clinical skills, exercise testing and interpretation.

LO2: Demonstrate a critical awareness of current issues in the CEP discipline relating to relevant guidelines and good clinical practice in setting up the environment where clients and patients can be tested.

LO3: Critically evaluate the risks when testing and benefits to determine exercise capacity and effects on underlying pathophysiology ensuring correct mitigation of risk and advice to client/ patient.

LO4: Develop competence in applying exercise testing skills such as assessment, manual blood pressure, cardiorespiratory testing including ECG testing and interpretation, and subsequently applying critical analysis in evaluating the risks and benefits to the client/patient.

LO5: Develop a critical awareness of medications and their potential effects on clients/ patients, and to critically review this in light of pathophysiology, clinical tests results and exercise.

Student Activity (Notional Equivalent Study Hours (NESH))
Mode of activityLearning & Teaching ActivityNESH (Study Hours)NESH Description
Face To Face Seminar 22 The module seminars will include theory of behaviours, skills needed in assessing clients, ethics, interpreting research and will also underpin knowledge needed in practical skills sessions. To get full benefit from the seminar and to support other students, you are expected to come prepared having engaged with the lecture material and associated essential reading - however your lecturer will support you if that has not been possible during that week.
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 16 Practical clinical skills will be taught in theory then delivered practically using current professional practice guidelines. These practical sessions will incorporate current evidence based practices where appropriate professional and ethical behaviours, client interactions and behaviours, can be practiced. We will utilise scenarios and case studies with feedback given in real time to correct errors and improve skills and practices.
Online Guided independent study 162 Each week reading materials and resources will be issued on Moodle (these will also be shared via the Module leganto list at the beginning of the module should you wish more time to engage with the materials). You are expected to read and reflect on the essential reading material which can be discussed during the practical sessions. Resources to help you to read and take productive study notes created by the University's Academic Skills team can be accessed on the module moodle page.

Type of Assessment Weighting % LOs covered Week due Length in Hours/Words Description
Discussion/Participation 60 1~5 Exam Period HOURS= 20 minutes During this dialogue you will take part in a discussion with the module tutors where you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your learning in relation to the following clinical skills and areas of practice; initial client/ patient assessment, identification of key health status and co-morbidities, risk and mitigation, selection and justification of correct clinical tests for a simulated patient, ethical behaviours and practices. You must pass all elements and components of assessment in this module in order to achieve an overall pass for this module.
Reflective Log 40 2~3~4 Week 12 , WORDS= 2000 words In this assessment, you will be asked to keep a reflective log regarding the assessment methods and tools you will be discussing in your seminar and practical sessions. In the main body of this assessment, you will need to focus on some of these assessment methods/tools and provide an in depth and critical discussion about the validity, reliability, sensitivity, user friendliness as well as risk/time and ethical implications involved in these methods. You must pass all elements and components of assessment in this module in order to achieve an overall pass for this module.
