SCQF credit value: 20.00
ECTS credit value: 10

Module code: SES11135
Module leader: Mel Leggate
School School of Applied Sciences
Subject area group: Sport Exercise and Health Science
Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisites for this module to be added

Description of module content:

This module will focus on the acute and chronic effects of exercise and physical activity on the human organism. During this module you will explore the concepts and principles, which underpin the interactions of the physiological systems and mechanisms in response to exercise. You will expand your knowledge in relation to the cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic and skeletal muscular responses to exercise. You will learn about how the various physiological systems integrate with one another and how exercise responses can prevent non-communicable diseases. The need to increase physical activity levels/exercise as a treatment or prevention for many chronic diseases is a world-wide pursuit. Therefore during this module you will engage with literature from across the globe and be encouraged to draw on evidence from a wide variety of populations.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Determine and critically evaluate the impact of exercise in relation to physiological systems, including respiratory, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems.

LO2: Conduct a range of exercise physiology based tests and critically reflect on your knowledge and understanding, professionalism and skills during this process.

LO3: Synthesise evidence-based literature and be able to convey guidance on the importance of and potential physiological benefits of being physically active/ taking part in exercise.

LO4: Demonstrate a critical understanding of the physiological responses to different types of exercise, including aerobic exercise, resistance exercise, flexibility and activities of daily living.

Student Activity (Notional Equivalent Study Hours (NESH))
Mode of activityLearning & Teaching ActivityNESH (Study Hours)NESH Description
Face To Face Seminar 20 Our weekly seminars will be lecturer-facilitated but will allow you to explore and apply theory introduced during the pre-recordedings to consolidate your knowledge and understanding. The majority of the discussion will be student-led and happen within small groups, though the group composition will change each week. To get full benefit from the seminar and to support other students, you are expected to come prepared having engaged with the lecture material
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 12 Our practical classes will allow you to develop your skills as an exercise physiologist by applying your knowledge. Each practical class will have a different topic where you will learn to use equipment key to an exercise physiology and have the opportunity to develop as a practitioner. You will get feedback throughout the practicals in relation to professionalism, conducting of tests and interpretation of data.
Face To Face Tutorial 6 Our tutorials will focus on discussing the formative assessment tasks and will involve a peer feedback session. This is intended to support all students in the tutorial to learn from each other fostering an assessment for learning approach.
Face To Face Guided independent study 162 Throughout the trimester, you are expected to structure in time to reflect upon the learning you have undertaken in your scheduled sessions and to complete your essential reading. You are encouraged to read more widely around the topics you are studying and engage in Moodle activities and resources. You will need to ensure that you have sufficient time to prepare and plan for your assessment tasks. You are expected to prepare for seminars, practicals and tutorials.

Assessment
Type of Assessment Weighting % LOs covered Week due Length in Hours/Words Description
Report 40 1~2~4 Week 9 , WORDS= 1500 words For this assessment you will be provided with a protocol to carry out an exercise test in class. You will receive feedback from your peers on how you conducted this practical. Your submission will be a written report summarising what you did in the laboratory, a reflection on the feedback/ critique from your peers using reflective models and an outline of what you would do differently (if anything) in future. You must pass all elements and components of assessment in this module in order to achieve an overall pass for this module.
Portfolio 60 1~3~4 Exam Period , WORDS= 5-8 items Create a digital learning pack aimed at a population aligned to the physical activity guidelines. The learning pack is to help this population engage with exercise. Your pack could include (but is not limited to) visually attractive fact sheets, check lists, appropriate recipes and invitations to participate in relevant activities. You will be required to submit a written or oral commentary and reflection alongside your learning pack (either 1500 words or 5 minutes). You must pass all elements and components of assessment in this module in order to achieve an overall pass for this module. You must pass all elements and components of assessment in this module in order to achieve an overall pass for this module.
