School School of Applied Sciences
Subject area group: Sport Exercise and Health Science
Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisites for this module to be added

Description of module content:

In this module you will learn how to develop your professional practice skills in order to enhance your applied sport science practice. You will explore key skills that are fundamental building blocks in your development as an applied sport scientist. These will include leadership approaches, styles and values; advanced communication skills and reflective learning. This module will also include significant research time, where you will work independently with a supervisor to develop the methodology for your own research project (this will be completed in trimester 3). Within this section of the module, you will develop skills relating to assessing risk, safeguarding, project planning, scientific methodology and consideration of limiting factors, data management and ethical considerations. Contemporary issues within the discipline will also be explored and you will develop a skill set of understanding how research contributes to existing knowledge and practice in the applied sport science setting.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to
LO1: Critically appraise contemporary research in applied sport science, understand how to synthesise literature and critique methodology design for generation of future ideas.
LO2: Critically appraise a contemporary issue within applied sport science and orally defend your conclusions following a period of independent study.
LO3: Critically assess health and safety procedures and ethical considerations that pertain to professional practice/applied sport science, for generation of future project ideas.
LO4: Plan an appropriate methodology for a research project in your chosen area, demonstrating critique of current literature to build rationale for the aim, research question and hypothesis aligned with the project.

Student Activity (Notional Equivalent Study Hours (NESH))
Mode of activityLearning & Teaching ActivityNESH (Study Hours)NESH Description
Face To Face Lecture 24 Through a series of lectures you will be presented with a number of different contemporary issues in sport science and sports medicine. The contemporary issues lectures will be designed to answer a specific scientific question, they will be accomplished by a brief synopsis of the current literature, before the presenter attempts to provide an answer to the question based on the latest knowledge. The evidence presented may be a combination of research evidence and expert opinion.
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 16 Workshops will be centered around flipped classrooms focused around the development of professional practice skills, reflective practice and assessment of risk/ethical considerations. There will be space for group work and peer learning in joint activities. Students will also present research ideas in this space, where they will be encouraged to critically reflect on their peers' design and rationale.
Online Guided independent study 158 Guided independent study will allow you to explore presented topics in more depth. Furthermore it will allow you to find topics of interest, that you can develop and work on for your own individual learning. This will also contribute significantly to the assessments on the module.
Face To Face Tutorial 2 Tutorial will be centered around assessments, providing a class opportunity to discuss this in more depth.

Assessment
Type of Assessment Weighting % LOs covered Week due Length in Hours/Words Description
Oral Presentation 50 1~2 Week 10 HOURS= 15 minutes You will present a contemporary issue in agreement with the module leader. Following ACSM guidelines a contemporary issue is defined as an areas that addresses a prominent or evolving issue in exercise science and sports medicine of interest to the sport science community and wider public. The topic should be evidence informed and the current state of knowledge and identification of research gaps should be evident. From the evidence presented you should provide a bottom line (answer to the question). You should use literature from the previous 5 years and critically explore the level of evidence provided.
Report 50 3~4 Week 13 , WORDS= 2500 The aim of this assignment is to produce a concise piece of work that demonstrates your understanding of a research issue, you will critically evaluate the literature to build rationale for the aim/hypothesis of the study. You will then provide a coherent methodology that addresses all relevant ethical issues associated with the project. Within this section you will assess the quality, validity and reliability of the measures. Lastly you will assess any risk associated with the project and complete a risk assessment aligned to this.
