Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
Students have the opportunity to attend research methods workshops as part of the module or to study the workshop materials online (LOs 1 and 2). Otherwise they work independently under the guidance of their supervisors (LOs 1-5). Students may elect to complete the dissertation over 1, 2 or 3 trimesters by selecting one of the published submission dates.



Formative Assessment:
By means of a dissertation (LOs 1-4) and viva examination report (LO5) at the end of the module. The dissertation is submitted on one of three dates each session, at the end of the trimester. The oral examination takes place on a date soon afterwards, normally within one week of submission and, for distance learning students, is normally conducted via teleconferencing or equivalent. The project is marked as a set of learning outcomes that have to be satisfied collectively. There is no individual weighting for separate learning outcomes.

Description of module content:

The work for this module comprises the completion of an individual research project. Each student is assigned a personal Supervisor, and an Internal Examiner who monitors progress and feedback, inputs advice, examines the dissertation and takes the lead at the viva. There are three preliminary deliverables prior to the submission of the final dissertation: (1) Project proposal (there is a formal approval process by module leader before projects start); (2) Initial Report; (3) Outline dissertation.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to
LO1: Conduct a literature search using an appropriate range of information sources and produce a critical review of the findings.
LO2: Demonstrate professional competence by sound project management and a) by applying appropriate theoretical and practical computing concepts and techniques to a non-trivial problem, or b) by undertaking an approved project of equivalent standard.
LO3: Show a capacity for self-appraisal by analysing the strengths and weakness of the project outcomes with reference to the initial objectives and to the work of others.
LO4: Provide evidence of the foregoing in the form of a dissertation which complies with the requirements of the School of Computing both in style and content.
LO5: Defend the work orally at a viva voce examination.
