Students have the opportunity to attend research methods workshops as part of the module or to study the workshop materialsonline (LOs 1 and 2). Otherwise they work independently under the guidance of their supervisors (LOs 1-5). Students may electto complete the dissertation over 1, 2 or 3 trimesters by selecting one of the published submission dates.

Students complete a Research Proposal at the beginning of the module. They receive formative feedback on this from both their supervisor and their internal examiner. Students also complete an Initial Report half way through the module. They again receive formative feedback on this from both their supervisor and their internal examiner. Students are provided with regular verbal formative feedback during their supervision meetings throughout the project.

By means of a dissertation (LOs 1-4) and viva examination report (LO5) at the end of the module. The dissertation is submitted on one of three dates each session, at the end of the trimester. The oral examination takes place on a date soon afterwards, normally within one week of submission and, for distance learning students, is normally conducted via teleconferencing or equivalent. The project is marked as a set of learning outcomes that have to be satisfied collectively. There is no individual weighting for separate learning outcomes.
