Description of module content:

The aim of this module is to introduce you to sociological thinking as a different way of understanding the social world. Focusing on social stratification, this module will look at the ways society is divided and interrelated. Key theories and concepts in sociology will be discussed, evaluated and compared. You will explore how sociological thinking is applied in research, policy and practice to examine and address contemporary challenges.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Recognise the ways in which sociology and sociological theory can be distinguished from other forms of understanding.

LO2: Define key concepts and theoretical approaches used in in the study of sociology.

LO3: Identify social divisions in society and their interrelationships.

LO4: Differentiate between the central arguments of key sociological thinkers.

LO5: Discuss key theoretical perspectives in contemporary sociology and the way they have contributed to our understanding of society and informed policy making and practice.

LO6: Develop critical reading, writing and presentational skills.

Online Guided independent study 164 Each week you will be provided with recommended and optional readings and an array of recorded audio and video content to support your learning.
Face To Face Lecture 24 Each week you will receive a 2-hour lecture. These lectures offer a blend of lecture, class discussion and activities.
Face To Face Tutorial 12 The tutorials apply ideas from the lecture into practice, with each week offering a mixture of class discussions, and activities such as newspaper analysis and informal presentations to apply sociological thinking.

Oral Presentation 70 1~3~5~6 Week 9 HOURS= 10 minutes This assessment will ask you to take a recent newspaper article and apply sociological concepts to analyse the role of class, gender and/or race in your chosen story. You will explain this via a short 'podcast' discussion which will be recorded and uploaded onto Moodle.
Class Test 30 2~4~5 Exam Period HOURS= 1 hour This Class Test will assess your knowledge of concepts and ideas from throughout the module. The test will ask you questions about the sociological theories used throughout the module and their application. This class test will happen under exam conditions.
