Description of module content:

This module will expand the analyses of the development of social and cultural thought as fully embedded in the development of global, colonial processes. Our understandings of society, culture and human social action are explored as contingent on and mediated by the social, economic, cultural and political relationships forged during key historical moments in colonial and imperial power. You will be encouraged to think of and practice social science with a view to becoming reflective social scientists, familiar with both Western notions of the social, as well as global majority critical experiences of modernity. This module will explore black intellectual study, global majority and decolonial thinking as a means to both challenge oppressions and represent the breadth of scholarship that may otherwise be marginalised. You will learn to think about modernity, race and coloniality as imbricated in class and social structural processes. Modern conceptions of social science necessarily need to be grounded in theoretical and historical readings of race, racism, imperialism, settler / colonialism, migration, nationalism, slavery, genocide, immigration, and borders. These are all key focal points for social scientific analyses today.
