Description of module content:

This module examines one of the most vibrant and contested issues within human geography. The module explores the meaning of ‘landscape? in Western and non-Western contexts, how it is socially and culturally constructed, how people make landscapes and how landscapes make people. The module incorporates a visual research project of urban space where students are encouraged to critically explore how urban landscapes are experienced and represented. Topics covered include: Landscape representation, imaginative geographies,Orientalism, urbanisation, gentrification, migration, natural landscapes.

Online Guided independent study 164 Independent study and research is an important part of the module. Each week you will be provided with recommended and optional readings and practical advice to support your learning and carrying out your research.
Face To Face Lecture 22 Each week you will receive a 2-hour in person lecture with the first lectures covering the more conceptual aspects related to landscapes in human geography, followed by a lecture focusing on visual methods and then more topical lectures focusing on some of the key themes within the field of cultural landscapes . These lectures offer a blend of lecture, class discussion and activities.
Face To Face Tutorial 11 The tutorials will be task based and apply ideas from the lecture into practice. Each week you will be given a task to complete ahead of tutorial as well as a reading to accompany it. We will discuss the task together as a class. This task will enable you to develop your visual as well as verbal and critical skills.
Online Fieldwork 3 You will carry out fieldwork to gather visual data which will feed into both assessments. This will take place during week 9 and you will receive practical support and advice on it throughout the module.

Oral Presentation 30 1~2~3~4~5~6 Week 9 HOURS= 10 minutes Oral presentation will be based on the visual data that you will collect from your fieldwork. This will be an individual presentation where you will present your findings in front of the class. Oral presentation will feed into your visual report and you will receive feedback on the presentation in the class.
Report 70 1~2~3~4~5 Week 13 , WORDS= 2500 words This visual report will be a written piece based on the research fieldwork that you will carry out and the presentation that you will give in the class. You will be provided with clear steps using a staggered approach to help you with planning and producing the report. The report will be 2500 words long and you will receive support and advice on how to produce it throughout the course of the module.
