Description of module content:

This module examines one of the most vibrant and contested issues within human geography. The module explores the meaning of ‘landscape’ in Western and non-Western contexts, how it is socially and culturally constructed, how people make landscapes and how landscapes make people. The module incorporates a visual research project of urban space where students are encouraged to critically explore how urban landscapes are experienced and represented. Topics covered include: Landscape representation, imaginative geographies,Orientalism, urbanisation, gentrification, migration, natural landscapes.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO2: Examine the relationships between human society and the material world
LO3: Illustrate an awareness of the ways in which environments are learned, imagined and represented
