Description of module content:

In this module you will study how work and organisation have been key to the development of sociological study and how they continue to occupy an important place in the discipline today. In this module you will examine the relationship between work, organisation and wider society both historically and in more contemporary settings. You will explore the development of capitalist organisation; the rise of management; how work came to occupy a central place in people's lives; the experience of work for those employed; and the social stigma of those who are without work. Topics you will study within this module include: industrialisation and the emergence of modern organisation; classic and contemporary approaches to managerial control; resistance and misbehaviour; the work ethic and managing unemployment; emotional and aesthetic labour; inequality and diversity in organisations; and the rise of digital platforms and digital labour.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Understand the social significance of work and employment in society.

LO2: Understand and identify forms of management and organisation in contemporary work.

LO3: Critically reflect upon the broader social processes shaping organisation and employment.

LO4: Determine the causes of conflict and the sources of cooperation and consent within organisations.

LO5: Understand how social inequalities are perpetuated through work and employment, and organisational process that seek to address these inequalities.
