Description of module content:

In this module you will discuss aspects of social identities including aging, gender and intimacy, social class, ethnicity and racialised identities, national identities, stigmatised identities, consumer identities and postmodern identities. Each week will include a discussion of one aspect of social identities, research that relates to the topic and one main theorist of identity. Some of the theorists included are Goffman, Bourdieu, Giddens, Anderson and Baudrillard. Included in each tutorial class will be discussion of research readings completed and 'methods experience' sessions which will provide opportunities to engage with research data and analyse this, connecting the themes emerging from the data to the lecture content for that topic.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO2: Critically reflect on the processes associated with identification.

LO3: Compare and contrast the theoretical approaches to the lived experiences of different identity categories.

LO4: Develop existing scholarly skills in relation to critical analysis and the construction of argument through regular written exercises.
