Description of module content:

This module is intended to give you a sound understanding of how people make choices about their career path, and select a suitable occupation. It also involves analysing theories of career development: how an individual’s career unfolds over time. The study of theory in this module is intimately linked to the use of theory in guidance practice. The application of career theory in counselling and in assessment is an important focus.

Most of the concepts to be explored derive from psychology or sociology, but no prior knowledge of these disciplines will be assumed. Career theories will be compared and contrasted. The relationship between theory and practice will be explored. Every opportunity will be taken to relate the value of concepts to the work of professional careers counsellors and educational guidance practitioners.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to:
LO1: Analyse traditional concepts of vocational and educational choice.
LO2: Analyse contemporary concepts of career development.
LO3: Critically explore the relationship between career theory and counselling practice.
LO4: Explain the implications of concepts for guidance services.
