This module emphasises the asset and capital intensive nature of hospitality, tourism and event operations (HTE), considering in particular the need for structured and coherent approaches towards the operation and management of property and associated facilities. The project development process is examined, together with related management issues such as alternative development strategies, investment appraisal, types of contract and operating models. The key components of risk inherent in operating HTE facilities are studied, as are common management and control strategies. Alternative approaches towards the operation and management of HTE facilities are examined, including extensive consideration of the principles entailed in the effective planning, implementation and monitoring of contracts and the management of energy and other environmental aspects. Throughout the module, comparisons and contrasts are constantly drawn between custom and practice in the public, private and not for profit sectors.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Explore the application of the concept of facilities management within Hospitality, Tourism & Events (HTE) environments

LO2: Evaluate the key principles and issues entailed in developing and managing HTE projects.

LO3: Identify the nature of risk within HTE environments and analyse strategies for its management and control.

LO4: Appraise appropriate strategies for the operation and management of HTE facilities, including contracting out and effective environmental management.

LO5: Evaluate the operation and management of THE facilities within the public, private, and not for profit sectors.
