Description of module content:

This module considers sport event tourism (SET) management, its development and processes alongside its impacts on local, national and global stakeholders. The module will cover a range of sporting events within an international context, from major sporting events such as the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, to smaller local events like the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon. Conceptual frameworks, typologies and definitions will provide students with a strong foundation to better understand this important sector for both events and tourism. The impacts of SET on the host, national and international community & its relevant stakeholders will be identified and appropriate evaluative frameworks discussed. We will look to better understand the resources required by a host destination in order to produce and maintain a strong SET offering through sport tourism destination resource analysis and will evaluate this in line with a destinations current tourism offering & market. Within the context of bidding, planning and staging of sports events, we will investigate current theory and frameworks around this area and apply these in a real world context, to self-selected student case studies. Finally, Consideration will be given to current issues and trends such as links to the UN sustainable development goals, the broadcasting of sport events, issues on wellness & community, and appraising likely future developments and demands worldwide.

LO2: Analyse and investigate the impacts of sport event tourism and investigate how these affect local, national and international communities.

LO3: Consider sport event tourism in respect of the host destination, its resources and current tourism markets.

LO4: Evaluate the processes the processes behind sport event tourism bidding, planning & staging.

LO5: Explore trends likely to affect the future of Sport Events in relation to tourism and development.

Independent Learning Seminar 12 The Lectures are complemented by seminars which provide you with the opportunity to apply definitions, frameworks, models, theories etc. to a wide range of internationally diverse case studies, examples and assessment choices.
Online Guided independent study 176 Guided independent study: Students are required to read and research (directed paper based and web based publications and approved databases) around the subjects presented in class to better develop their understanding of the concepts under investigation.

Your narrated PowerPoint presentation should cover the proposed bidding criteria, event planning considerations and identify how your event will be staged.
