Description of module content:

1. Anatomy and PhysiologyThrough this course, you will gain a foundational understanding of human anatomy and physiology, with a focus on the major body systems and their functions. Through tutorials and online activities, you will also develop the ability to use appropriate nursing terminology to describe these systems and the care associated with them. This learning aligns with Platform 3: Assessing Needs and Planning Care from the NMC Future Nurse: Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses (NMC, 2018). 2. Professional Responsibility and Self-AwarenessTo provide effective nursing care, it is essential to be aware of your own needs and professional responsibilities. Throughout this course, you will begin to develop the skills necessary to reflect on your personal wellbeing and consider how it may influence your ability to care for others. This focus aligns with Platform 1: Being an Accountable Professional from the NMC Future Nurse: Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses (NMC, 2018). 3. Health Inequalities and DiversityYou will explore the nurse’s role in reducing health and social inequalities, and in promoting respect for the diversity of individuals, families, communities, and populations. You will reflect on how these inequalities affect mental, physical, and behavioural health and wellbeing, as well as people’s access to equitable and inclusive care. This learning aligns with Platform 2: Promoting health and preventing ill health of the NMC Future Nurse: Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses (NMC, 2018).4. Healthcare NumeracyFinally, you will develop foundational healthcare numeracy skills essential for safe and effective nursing practice. Through an online learning platform, you will apply these skills in practical contexts to support clinical decision-making. This learning aligns with Platform 1: Being an Accountable Professional from the NMC Future Nurse: Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses (NMC, 2018).5. Student Support and TransitionYou will also be introduced to key aspects of student life, including self-care, study skills, library resources, campus orientation, and access to student support services.This combination of academic content and wider university support is designed to ease your transition into year two of the Bachelor of Nursing programme, ensuring that all students who successfully complete this course are equipped with the same level of knowledge, skills, and confidence as their peers progressing from year one.You will also receive input relating to key aspects of student life, including self care, study skills, library support, university familiarity and student support services.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of anatomical and physiological structures, processes, using appropriate nursing terminology to outline these.

LO2: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of physiological principles - homeostasis, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and genetic principles within cell division.

LO3: Explain the importance of supporting your own health and how it may impact on your ability to care for others.

LO4: Recognise the importance of health promotion, protection, and improvement, within communities.

LO5: Demonstrate numeracy skills applied to nursing practices

LO6: Demonstrate understanding of the professional requirement to Practice in accordance with the NMC Code: Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour (NMC, 2018) for nurses and midwives

Face To Face Tutorial 32 You will attend in person tutorials where you will develop your understanding of human anatomy and physiological process, your own health and well being and how this can affect your ability to care for others in diverse settings. Teaching will be delivered in person, and will include a range of learning and teaching modes including content delivery, small group work, reflective activities and quizzes.
Online Guided independent study 40 Teaching content will be delivered via the universities chosen virtual learning environment. This will include, workbooks, online quizzes, videos and other media. It is expected that you will completed the activities on the virtual learning environment as directed by the teaching team.
