Description of module content:

This continuing professional development course will equip you, as an internationally recruited midwife, with essential knowledge and practical skills across four core areas related to the UK context of practice: the role and scope of midwifery practice in the UK, maternal and newborn care, fetal monitoring, and informed consent within a human rights framework. You will explore professional requirements such as accountability, autonomy, referral pathways and working as a member of a multidisciplinary team. You will learn to perform and interpret comprehensive maternal and newborn assessments, applying tools such as MEWS, partograms, APGAR scores, and NEWTT to inform safe, personalised care. This course will also develop competence in fetal heart monitoring using cardiotocography (CTG), including interpretation of traces, escalation protocols via SBAR, and the application and removal of fetal scalp electrodes (FSE), with emphasis on consent and clinical indications. This course will enable you to understand the legal and ethical dimensions of maternity care, focusing on informed consent, bodily autonomy, and informed decision making. Through reflective practice and scenario-based learning, you will explore professional standards, cultural considerations, and advocacy in diverse healthcare settings. The course aligns with NMC Midwifery Standards (2019) and supports the Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI), promoting responsive infant feeding and skin-to-skin contact. By integrating theory, clinical skills, and independent study, this course will prepare you to deliver compassionate, evidence-based care that respects women's choices and enhances outcomes for mothers and newborns.
