In this online study module, the focus is on neonates who require special and transitional care within a range of setting, together with the needs of their parents, carers and family. The module will develop your neonatal expertise, improve your transferable skills and enhance your career options in the field of maternity care and neonatology.The module will support you to develop your knowledge and understanding of neonatal transition to extrauterine life and common conditions which can interrupt this physiological process. The content will introduce genetics, embryology and fetal development. You will explore the perinatal, maternal and environmental factors that may impact neonatal outcomes during adaptation to extrauterine life. A systems approach to physiology, altered physiology and pathophysiology will be adopted to support you develop assessment skills in relation to neonatal health and wellbeing.You will critically engage with the global evidence-base on neonatal special and transitional care building relevant research skills. The principles of supportive neurodevelopmental care will underpin the management regimes discussed with family integrated care and multidisciplinary approaches at the forefront of your practice.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Describe altered homeostasis in the neonate requiring special and/or transitional care, including variations in care based on gestational age, diagnosis and/or co-morbidities.

LO2: Evaluate special and transitional care management strategies in relation to the global evidence base and contemporary research.

LO3: Consider professional regulation, ethical conduct and legal principles underpinning neonatal and special and transitional care.

LO4: Reflect on the educational and support needs of carers/guardians of neonates requiring special and /or transitional care.

LO5: Consider the global evidence base in relation to the impact of family integrated care and neurodevelopmental supportive care on neonatal outcomes.
